The Three Key Components of Success in Business and in Life

This morning at a Chamber of Commerce networking event, David Tyson from Sandler Training www.salestrac.sandler.com, gave a great sales presentation on how to improve your “BAT-ting average in business and life. It’s based around the success triangle concept of Success, Behavior, and Technique. His basic premise was that nothing happens in life unless you are involved. In other words, these three components are critical to have in your business and life to reach the levels of success that you wish to achieve.
Attitude is a choice, it’s all about YOU! It’s the internal mechanism that you have total control over for better or worse. What you believe about your business and marketplace direction will determine your level of success. What you believe about your company and how you fit into that picture has a bearing on your success as well. The what and how of your beliefs will determine your outcomes. Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve. A positive, optimistic attitude will make everything better even when external circumstances don’t match. If you don’t believe you are going to win or makes sales, then you won’t. It all starts with attitude!
Behavior is usually a bi-product of a person’s attitude. Behavior is the external component of the success triangle and it’s more focused on the DOING part of your life. We are talking about things such as your daily habits, your character and morals, and how you respond or react to situations. Three major pieces of behavior are setting goals, making plans, and then taking action to make sure things come to fruition and are completed. Personally, I have often found that people who are passionate about their life have written goals with a plan to achieve them, they get out of bed in the morning excited about their day and ready to get after it. Goals fuel the fire of our lives and when coupled with a can do, persistent attitude, nothing can get in your way.
This is the SKILLS part of the success triangle. Technique is the How To of the equation. Think about it: You can have a great attitude and goals written down, but if you do not have the fundamenals of how to go about what you want to accomplish, it’s going to make life very challenging and the goals harder to reach. That’s why personal education is so important. Be a good listener and follower of those who have gone before you and accomplished what you are trying to do. Research and educate yourself on the task at hand. Attend sales seminars, read books, visit with top sales reps, find articles on the internet, etc. To improve the quality of what you do in business or in life you will have to master your technique and skills.
So there you have it, the internal, external, and actionable part of the success triangle. Attitude is about YOU, Behavior is about DOING, and Technique is about proper ACTIONS.
